August 5, Yatta Hospital Update

Since the beginning of its construction in 2019, the MCF Yatta Hospital has been an inspiring project both in scale and God-given vision. Thanks to the dedication of faithful supporters, this establishment has flourished in its construction phase!

The hospital will feature a fully equipped Emergency Room and provide all services typical of a level 5, 325-bed facility. It will serve 3 counties, Machakos, Kiambu, Murang’a, and Kitui. It is vital for patient fees to be waived for those who cannot afford healthcare. Additionally, the hospital will offer training for intern doctors and medical staff. Dr. Mulli is constructing stone houses for medical personnel to ensure they are well rested for an immense workload.

Understanding the Scope of the Facilities

To understand the importance of MCF Yatta Hospital, it’s essential to know that a level 4 hospital in Kenya is a primary referral unit managed by the county. It is led by a medical director, and staffed by clinical officers and nurses. They provide a variety of health services, including:

  • X-ray and laboratory services
  • Maternity in-patient care
  • TB, diabetes, and hypertension clinics
  • Pharmacy services
  • Comprehensive care clinics for patients living with HIV

They may also feature specialist medical centers, surgical centers, diagnostic services, and clinical laboratories.

The next tier is a county-run secondary referral hospital with over 100 beds. In addition to level 4 services, these hospitals offer advanced healthcare options such as:

  • Ultrasound and CT scans
  • Surgery
  • Physiotherapy
  • Orthopedics
  • Occupational therapy

These facilities also provide internship opportunities for medical staff, conduct research, and serve as training centers for paramedical personnel.

Construction Progress of the Hospital

Significant progress has made on the main construction of Blocks A and B.  In the meantime a smaller hospital is being built at the Ndalani sight, which already has a small clinic for all MCF kids and staff plus many in the community. This smaller Ndalani hospital will be a prototype and is a significant upgrade from the current small clinic. It will serve Ndalani and the surrounding communities well.

Construction is ongoing as funding becomes available. Due to the lack of freezing winter conditions, it is common to build in stages without the risk of structural damage between phases.

The MCF Yatta Hospital will function as faith-based healthcare facilities, offering subsidized healthcare services to the general public while charging standard fees to those who can afford them. Additional revenue in Yatta will stem from the medical students who intern and gain practical experience at the facility.

Prayer

Please keep the hospital construction and the safety of the MCF workers in your prayers as they continue to construct this important project.

A special thanks to George Zimmerman for his commitment to reporting and gathering information.

Kenya and Tanzania face 'humanitarian crisis' amid disastrous floods

Kenya and neighbouring Tanzania escaped major damage from a tropical cyclone that weakened after making landfall on Saturday, but the rains continue to pour.

The country continued to endure torrential downpours and the risk of further floods and landslides, the government in Nairobi said.

In western Kenya, the River Nyando burst its banks in the early hours of Sunday, engulfing a police station, school, hospital and market in the town of Ahero in Kisumu County, police said.

Weeks of heavier than usual seasonal rains, compounded by the El Nino weather pattern, have wreaked chaos in many parts of East Africa, a region highly vulnerable to climate change.

Schools closed
Schools remain closed,... Children will be able to catch up on classes, the Education minister told her.

"It's a serious situation and we should not take it lightly," Kenyan government spokesman Isaac Mwaura said at a briefing on the crisis on Sunday.
President William Ruto went to the area of Mathare in the capital to reassure the population.

Concerns of 'wider humanitarian crisis'

The government has ordered anyone living near major rivers or dams to leave the area or face "mandatory evacuation for their safety", with many dams or reservoirs threatening to overflow.

Mwaura also warned of the risk of waterborne diseases, with one case of cholera reported as well as incidents of diarrhoea.

Forecasts of more rains raised "serious concerns" about a "wider humanitarian crisis", Jagan Chapagain, head of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), wrote on social media.

The current devastating floods in Kenya exacerbate the existing humanitarian challenges in the country where millions are already grappling with acute food insecurity due to prolonged drought.

Kenya, a country firmly on the frontlines of the climate crisis, has swung from a devastating, multi-year drought — which scientists said was made at least 100 times more likely by climate change — into deadly flooding.

Me? Go on a Mission Trip???

Me? Go on a Mission Trip???

October 2022

The purpose of this note to share highlights of the Medical Mission Trip to Mully Children’s Family in Ndalani, Kenya this past July.  It was a remarkable time of learning and caring for the children and the community. Our sincere thanks to all who supported team members and clinic expenses. Below are a few highlights of the trip. We hope you will support us in planning for another similar trip next summer when we would once again recruit doctors and nurses. We have an urgent need for dentists, oral surgeons, optometrists, and pharmacists! Hundreds of patients could not get the dental or eye care they needed. Read on for more details……

In July 2022 three American doctors and 13 Canadians (including 1 doctor from Montreal, a nurse from Belleville and a nurse from Vancouver area) had a great time visiting MCF Kenya and serving at the July Medical Mission Camp. Most of us were not medical people, just willing helpers. Over 1,500 patients were cared for including MCF staff or children wanting to see a doctor and hundreds of the community who have not had the opportunity to come to a medical camp since Covid started.

(Yes, that’s Paul Boge who was at MCF working on his new book!)

The journey began with a visit to Kibera Slum - the largest urban slum in Africa, previous home to some of the Mully children.

During the clinic several tragic cases caught our attention.  A young man in a wheelchair for 9 months was misdiagnosed with meningitis.  Our doctor had him walking with assistance after two treatments.  Another elderly gentleman with an open, festering, 4-month leg wound, walked (limped) miles to the clinic. The medical team cleaned the wound and administered antibiotics and sent him to the hospital.

Dr.George Kairo, rescued from the streets who now comes to serve at the medical camps.

When we visited the nursery, we found 18 babies wrapped in rows and sleeping soundly. Then they woke up!!

Three girls on the left are training to become plumbers. Elizabeth on the right from the 2016 choir.

What was truly impressive about this model of care for abandoned, abused and vulnerable children, is their success.  After completing Grade 12, children are equipped with an education, good health, a strong Christian faith and an incredible attitude towards life.  They have character traits that are enviable.  They know how to serve, they are gracious and polite, they are loving and patient, they are motivated.  They go on to College or University - all paid for by Daddy Mully - to become contributing members of their communities as plumbers, doctors, lawyers, teachers, pilots, mechanics, carpenters, hair stylists to name a few.  The Mully vision is to find the potential in each child.  The prayer is that these children would go on to transform communities, the government of Kenya and to raise a generation of leaders with strong families.

It was a joy and honour to share this experience with our team.  I have many new friends and am grateful to the Lord for yet another life-giving, faith-enriching experience.

Thank you to those who contributed to support the work of Mully Children's Family and thank you to those who upheld our team in prayer.

When people visit MCF they are struck by the vastness of all that MCF entails while still not being institutional, but a large, loving family. Start your plans to join us next summer!

Charles Mully is a remarkable man with a God-ordained mission. "We are not an orphanage; we are a family."   May we all embrace his faith in God and his passion to serve those in need.

Thank you to Health Partners International Canada for their medicines and supplies

Very cool video of the Mully Mission Choir for a group of visitors from the USA plus clips of MCF campuses. The 1st group from MCF-USA since Covid-19 visited the home of this divine ministry to see firsthand the love of Jesus in action.

The main Ndalani compound delivers 3000 meals per day! They need the world's largest pot to feed the world's largest family! Over 448,000 meals per month serve all facilities.
Although food shortages are a concern in most of northern Africa, MCF Kenya has put in place a remarkable strategy that has moved them towards a sustainable environment in their semi arid, desert-like environment. They have planted over 20 million trees lowering the temperature by a few degrees. They cultivate 17 acres of greenhouses and gardens, herd cattle, goats and pigs and are waiting to open two chicken barns as soon as Kenya Electric hooks up the generator. Please pray for this. Most importantly, the children are well fed no longer suffering chronic hunger pain.

What you can do:

  1. Consider coming next summer.
  2. Consider donating.

We wired $25,000 CAD to purchase medicine and supplies for the clinic and for ongoing community care that MCF provides free of charge.  We are still short about $8,000. If you would like to donate to this, it would be very much appreciated.

Thank you,

Cathy and Al Snowball, Team Leaders

Thank you to team member Jane E. for your help with this report.

A Reflection on the Fear of Failure

Dear Supporters,

I am so inspired by the many ways in which people's hearts are moved and called to an act of love. In fact, as you will read below, it was God's call that moved Charles Mulli to take a leap and launch Mully Children's Family, an organization that has now helped over 25,000 children since 1989.

Part of that incredible legacy of thousands of lives saved has been Arvid and Ruth Loewen's commitment to using their gifts in service and love. I am truly grateful for Arvid and Ruth who, yet again, have inspired many Canadians to respond generously to help the children of Mully Children's Family in Kenya.

Unfortunately, due to unfavourable weather, Arvid was not able to break the Guinness World Record to cycle 10,000km in about 22 days. Instead, he achieved a more important goal: to help some of the world's most vulnerable children.

I invite you to read Arvid and Ruth's compelling reflection on the fear of failure as it relates to cycling, MCF, and life.

On behalf of Dr. Charles and Esther Mulli and the Board of Directors here in Canada, I want to give hearty congratulations and a big thank you to Arvid and Ruth. They are examples of humility and generosity and we are grateful for the many ways they have supported the children of MCF.

Finally, thank you to you, our valued supporters, for your consistent demonstration of compassion and commitment to partner with this ministry.

Abundant Blessings,

Esther Atemo
Executive Director
Mully Children's Family Canada

P.S. It's still not too late to help Arvid meet his fundraising goal. Visit https://mcfcanada.org/donate/grandpascan to give today!

We, (Arvid & Ruth) want to say a big 'THANK YOU' to those who have supported us with prayer during the 10,000km Guinness World Record (GWR) attempt
. A special thank you to everyone who has or is planning to make a donation. Without you, the GWR attempt would have little purpose. As you may know, things didn't turn out as planned and I stopped way short of my goal.

However, some 20 years ago I made a promise to Ruth that if I knew that by continuing to ride in an event I would potentially risk my long-term health, I would stop. Over the years, there have been a few other times where I DNF'd (did not finish). With the prolonged heatwave and the smoke from the forest fires, I am very relieved to not be on my bike anymore.

A perspective on the Fear of Failure...

Sometimes I am asked this question"Are you not afraid that you will fail and not be able to achieve the goal you set for yourself?"

The answer is: “All the time”.

A number of years ago, I had an experience that put my "fear of failure" into a new perspective for me. I was only 5 days into an

18-day fundraising ride from Inuvik, the furthest point north in Canada to Point Pelee, the furthest point south, when a number of factors contributed to me abandoning my ride.

I was devastated and answering media questions was one of the hardest things I have ever done.

The drive home in the Leisure Van from Fort Nelson in northern BC to Winnipeg was very long, and the anticipation of meeting friends and family was gut-wrenching. I had failed to do what I had set out to do. My perception however changed when I listened to a message on our answering machine that evening. It was from someone who had followed our journey. I had to listen to the message three times before I could understand what he was saying, because his voice was quivering and unclear with all the emotion. I will paraphrase the message he left me.

"Arvid, thank you for the example you set in showing me how to cope with disappointment. It meant a lot more to me than if you would have accomplished your goal.” It took me a while to understand that what I viewed as failure, God used to speak to the circumstances in this individual's life.

Charles Mulli is the founder of Mully Children’s Family. He was abandoned by his family at age 6. After being shuffled from one relative to the next, mostly living on the street, Charles got a job. Eventually, he became a multi-millionaire. Then one day God prompted his heart to sell all of his businesses and take street kids into his home. Today Charles and his wife Esther care for over 4000 formerly orphaned or abandoned children.

When God called Charles to give up his businesses, he too was afraid. He was afraid of what his family and friends would say. He was afraid of being ineffective and becoming the laughingstock in the community. He was afraid to risk everything he had for the sake of those he did not even know.

Just imagine what would have happened to thousands of kids, if he had given in to the fear of failure?

I sometimes wonder what opportunities we are missing, because we are too afraid to step outside of our safe comfort zone. It is not about what we can do, but rather what God can do through us when we make ourselves available. Does our fear of failure prevent us from being available for God?

I am convinced that God can turn a 'failed' 10,000km GWR attempt into the most successful fundraising platform ever and help Charles & Esther feed thousands of destitute children and adults.

The things we do for ourselves will be forgotten when we are gone. Only the things we do for others will live on.

- Grandpa Arvid

Arvid Loewen's Ride

Dear Supporters,

I am writing to update you on Arvid Loewen, who, as you know, undertook an ambitious and exciting cycling goal in support of MCF. I will let you read the update in his own words, as he shared on Facebook (see below) last week.

I congratulate and thank Arvid & Ruth Loewen for using Arvid's platform as an athlete to inspire us to take remarkable action individually and collectively to support the children in need in Kenya.

I also want to thank all those who continue to donate toward Arvid and Ruth's campaign. Changing the lives of children in need is the most worthy goal.

The 10,000 km GWR is no longer in jeopardy.

But the 4000 children at MCF still are.

I am disappointed, but 100% certain that I (we) made the right call. I am no longer on the road in pursuit of the 10,000 GWR record. Yesterday, I got off the bike at 11 pm. I had suffered a lot, especially in the afternoon heat, to reach the 441.7 km existing GWR pace.

5 hours later, I had a breakfast of scrambled eggs and porridge, only to deposit all of it on Henderson Highway. My stomach rejected the nourishment I needed. The 7-day forecast didn't promise any relief either. The four day forecast calls for temperatures and humidex of mid 30-40 degrees. To make a much longer deliberating process short, I came to the conclusion that I, in my 65th year, am no longer able to ride at 400+ km daily distances. I will need to modify my cycling fundraising strategy again.

After a successful Race Across America in 2008 and then again in 2013, I had to DNF in 2017. I was 61. I also made the decision at that time that multi-week 24/7 cycling events would no longer be part of my extreme cycling fundraising platform. It was simply too hard at my age.

So instead, I did a 9000 km Deadhorse to Key West ride, a 15,000 km 'Celebration Ride' in honour of the 15,000 children that had graduated as adults from MCF. In 2020 I set the record for the Farthest Distance cycled in One Month. These events, while still very extreme, included an end and a beginning to each day. They included anywhere from 6-9 hours of recovery time, something I was able to still do. These were the most successful fundraising years to date.

Now I am faced with another change. I can no longer do 'multi-week' events, where my recovery time is less than 12 hours. Not sure what future cycling fundraising events will look like, but they will include some significant recovery time.

If you were considering making a donation to MCF at some point during my 22-day attempt, please consider making it even if I am not riding anymore.

If you are part of the 100,000 km = $100,000 match challenge, keep riding till the end of July. Together we can 'cash in' on the full $100,000 matching pledge.

As I said before; The record is no longer in jeopardy, but the children that need our help sure are.

Ruth & I thank you in advance for helping us provide 600,000 meals to children in desperate need.

Grandpa Arvid and Grandma Ruth invite YOU to ride with them

Have you ever been paid to ride your bike? I am offering you something even better. This year I will turn 65 years old. I will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the fastest time to cycle 10,000 km, which was set by Guus Moonen from the Netherlands in 2010 at 22 days, 15 hours, and 34 minutes.

My record attempt will begin on June 28 and hopefully finish on July 20th. (I made an unsuccessful attempt of this record in 2014.) As you know, the main reason I do this is to raise awareness and funds for Mully Children's Family, a street children rescue mission in Kenya, Africa.

Arvid and Ruth with children and grandchildren

Here is how YOU can get involved.

An anonymous donor will donate $1 to MCF for every km YOU ride between now and the end of my GWR attempt. I am inviting individuals, couples, families, teachers, and students from across Canada & beyond to keep track of the # of km they cycle between now and the end of my record attempt in July. I also need you to donate and/or get pledges for every km you ride.

After the event, you would send your donated/raised funds, along with the km cycled, to our field office in Winnipeg. This will then activate the pledge to match everything up to $100,000.

The funds will go towards food/general operating expenses. $0.50 provides one full meal to a hungry child/adult. This is a great practical teaching activity for parents/grandparents and their children. For example, if a child cycles one km, someone will donate $1 to MCF. That provides 1 meal for 2 children/adults. If these kids then donate/raise another $1/km in pledges from their friends or families, they provide 4 meals, etc.

Our children grow up with food, shelter, education, health care, and love. The children rescued by Mully Children's Family are deserving of the same.

No amount of effort, commitment, and sacrifice on our part will ever exceed the value of a child's life created in the image of God. This includes children that have been abandoned by everyone—except God.

The promise of a future filled with HOPE to a destitute child is ours to give. Please email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and let me know you are participating. Just knowing you are riding somewhere is a huge encouragement to me as I train and prepare for the actual GWR attempt. You can contact me at 204-996-8758 or on Facebook by clicking here.

100,000 km cycled by YOU (and others) generates a $100,000 match by an anonymous donor. Add to it $100,000 raised by YOU (and others) and we will provide 400,000 meals for children and adults in need of your help.

Thank you for providing HOPE!

THE YOUNGEST MEMBER OF OUR FAMILY NEEDS YOUR HELP

Dear Supporters,

Last month, I wrote to you about a family of children – Brian, Faith, and, little Samuel, who had just recently joined Mully Children’s Family (read here). This month, I want to share with you a glimpse into what the future might look like for these three children.

Mercy is a brilliant girl who also comes from a family with three children. The early years of Mercy’s life were filled with tragedy. She never knew or saw her biological father, just like the three children I wrote about last month, but she did have a stepfather. He passed away when Mercy was quite young.

Like too many women in sub-Saharan Africa, Mercy’s mother died due to preventable causes during childbirth. Sadly, this was only a short time after the passing of her stepfather.

The family of children– one who was just a little newborn– was poor and alone.

Mercy at age 9, when she joined MCF.

Mercy at age 9, when she joined MCF.

After the burial of Mercy’s mother, her grandparents took the children in. They did not have much money being too frail to work much. Many nights the children would go to bed hungry and cold because their grandparents could not provide more than love.

It was the area administration chief that highlighted Mercy’s case to MCF. After a home visit, Dr. Charles and Esther Mulli immediately rescued Mercy and brought her into their care. She was just 9-years old.

Thanks to supporters like you, Mercy was given everything that she needed to thrive: good food, shelter, clothing, spiritual nourishment, medical care and protection, and an education.

School was Mercy’s great passion. She was enrolled in grade 3, and it was clear that she would excel.

As she grew, Mercy continued to demonstrate her scholastic excellence and strong leadership skills. She graduated high school with top marks. Eventually, Mercy achieved her dream – attending the Bachelor of Science in Medicine and Surgery program at the Nairobi University.

Mercy graduated with honours, and is currently a doctor under government employment. She pursued further studies and recently graduated with her Masters of Medicine in Clinical Oncology in December 2020.

Thanks to the help of supporters like you, an orphan living in poverty has grown to become the very first doctor in her home region. She has become a source of hope and light in her family and many children in MCF.

Thank you for supporting children like Mercy. Dr. Mulli, his wife Esther, the Board, and I are grateful for your help in transforming lives.

Blessings,
